LeRoy Charles Ermis 6/5/32-12/29/17 LeRoy “Lee” Ermis passed away unexpectedly and will be greatly missed. Lee was born in Shulenberg, Texas as the only child of Charles and Hattie Ermis. He graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School and attended the University of Texas.
Lee joined the Navy as an aviator cadet and received his wings in January, 1957. He married his first love, Jan, his wife of sixty years, in June that same year. Lee was deployed on numerous cruises during the Vietnam conflict, and flew hundreds of combat missions in service to our country. He continued his stellar military career mainly at Miramar Naval Air Station and North Island. Lee achieved the rank of Captain and retired from the Navy, his second love, after logging over five thousand hours in Navy aircraft and twenty-three years of service to our nation.
After fulfilling his life-long dream of becoming a fighter pilot, Lee returned to school and received a Master’s Degree in accounting. He enjoyed a second career working for H&R Block and Intuit, before starting his own tax business. Lee spent the last sixteen years of his life as a volunteer with the San Diego Retired Senior Voluntary Patrol. He enjoyed serving his community and the comradery with his fellow volunteers. Lee’s greatest joy in life was spending time with his family, which he did selflessly and often.
He will be remembered as a polite and gracious man who always put the needs of others before himself. Lee was a loyal husband, father, grandfather, patriot, and a consummate gentleman. Lee leaves behind an appreciative and loving family: Jan, his wife; son Jeffrey and daughter-in-law Mary; son Michael and son-in-law Todd; and two granddaughters Robyn and Julia. A Celebration of Life is on Wednesday, January 31 at 10:30 am, Our Mother of Confidence Catholic Church (3131 Governor Dr., San Diego, CA). Internment at 12:30 pm, Miramar National Cemetery.
